West of England Dental Nurse Training (WoEDNT) was set up in 2002 by a group of two dentists and three dental nurses all actively engaged in general dental practice. The aim was to provide training for the Level 3 NVQ qualification in Oral Health Care, Dental Nursing. This had been established by the City and Guilds of London Institute as an alternative to the National Certificate as a route to qualification as a dental nurse.

Scheme and Centre approval was obtained from City and Guilds and staff worked for and obtained appropriate Assessor and Internal Verifier qualifications.

All centres are visited and checked on a regular basis by an External Verifier, who works for City and Guilds and ensures that all centres are applying the standards in an appropriate manner. External verifier reports on WoEDNT have been very complimentary.

The syllabuses for both the NVQ and the National certificate are in the process of revision and the two routes to qualification will have more in common in future. It has therefore been decided to offer a course leading to the National Certificate in Dental Nursing in addition to the established NVQ training.
